Caboose

Caboose being placed on trucks

This caboose was donated to the Wheaton Historical Society by Heartlands members Jane and Bobby Ballard. Bob King, a retired railroad employee and friend of the Heartlands, laid the track for the caboose in the same place the rail line once ran. According to the Monett times article dated December 4, 2009, this is the first railroad car in Wheaton since the train station closed on September 8, 1946.

The Wheaton Historical Society held a grand opening celebration at the Wheaton Depot Museum on July 11, 2009. Ralph and Betty Lamberson spearheaded the museum project. Several people have loaned items for display. Jerry McMillen loaned a model of Missouri and North Arkansas steam locomotive #50. Leroy Sligar has loaned them a general railroad collection. Another collector, Jeff Cooney (also a Heartlands member) has loaned them items specific to the Missouri and North Arkansas line. Jim Wakefield, provided train information, including details on cabooses. Tim Kubat provided copies of building plans that matched Wheaton's facility. On display are many photos and other items about the history of the depot and the Missouri and North Arkansas line.
